My Story
The project is a life-long dream to bring peoples together from both sides of the Irish Sea, initially on a journey from St. Davids Head to Holy Head and from Dun Laoghaire to Cork. The music commissioning led project, supported by lyrics and visuals, will be based on life on the edge of the Irish Sea, life on it and life underneath it, so, endless material and opportunities to celebrate one of the most topographically and culturally enriched circuits of geological and maritime history.
In part, this is a legacy of my deep determination to create realistic opportunities for cultural practitioners to be able to base themselves in the region that gives them their lifeblood, rather than, like I was told by the powers that be, that you can’t make a living here, you have to go away. I’m not having this I thought and when I went to Birmingham College of Art in 1970, to study Jewellery and Silversmithing, I went with a determination to set up my own workshop back in Fishguard upon leaving, and this I did. It’s always been a struggle but more often than not the creative industries are – it feeds the adrenalin! My commitment went well beyond my own fortunes and looking back, very proudly, I have created many opportunities for cultural practitioners to either base themselves here or to share their creative outputs here, and to build on the international contacts we continue to bring here.
Of course, I have not done this alone, and there are now a growing number of cultural facilitators in the regions.
Our ethos is in sharing, giving and facilitating opportunities for all across society to be able to expend their energies creatively, to develop a sense of cultural pride, strength and determination and, from day one, engaging with schools as a key part of their curriculum studies. The reintegration of schools in the community is central and cross generational sharing is an essential part of life’s wellbeing. We not only show a commitment to the Welsh language but to the Irish language, and this is being reciprocated by our Irish friends.
We are of course in our early years, but the foundations are deep and solid. We will warmly welcome donations and sponsorship and more details are on our ‘Friends’ page. Meanwhile, the following lyrics, specially commissioned from the renowned lyricist Grahame Davies, are the perfect scene setting. They have been set to music by Paul Mealor and the piece will be premiered by Islwyn Evan’s Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion, in St. Davids Cathedral, on October 26th 2024.
